The Reassertion of Masculinity
March 18, 2010
THE MEN’S RIGHTS movement is tainted by self-interest and misogyny. Nevertheless, the restoration of Western society depends on men: their leadership, confidence, foresight, judgment, strength, intellect and dynamism.
Here is a statement to this effect by a man known as Elder George of Men’s Action to Rebuild Society, a New Age effort to reestablish patriarchy:
In order to change the lot of women and children and improve the condition of society in general men must regain their authority and exercise it. … They must realize that they created all the institutions that now have power over them. Institutions have no ethics, no love, and no reality. Ethics come from men who realize the purpose of human existence is the propagation and preservation of the species while on its spiritual journey. They must rise up and reassert themselves, and this is a good time to do it as a growing discontent has arisen against all the institutions that Western man has created. People have lost faith in government and all the bureaucracies that they have spawned.
Why don’t the men act? They have been conditioned to be unsure of themselves regarding their relationship with women. … It’s time for the men to step forward and create a society outside of the existing institutions. The only natural societal structure is patriarchy and only men can establish it.
Jesse writes:
Elder George has a well developed moral philosophy. I am not sold on every part of his overall philosophy but I definitely like what he has to say in regards to gender issues, the role and function of men and women, how patriarchy is necessary for society to function well. He is about 80 years old. He is indeed “a wise elder” for those smart enough to listen to him. I think some of his insights about sex roles come from the fact that he has experiences of what life was like before modern feminism took over.
The Men’s Rights Movement (MRM) lets him speak; different MRM outlets have let him communicate his ideas. This is because, in my opinion, Elder George advocates patriarchy, advocates the idea that men should be in charge, be the leaders of their households. Elder George often bemoans the decline in male authority and talks about how bad this is and the many problems it causes. This is the kind of thing that people in the MRM like to hear which is why they give him a platform to spread his views.
However, Elder George also talks repeatedly about how the role of men is to provide the environment and the means for women to bring forth life and nurture it. Elder George explains what the male role is in society rather clearly. These parts of Elder George’s message the people in the MRM conveniently ignore. You see, the people in the MRM, your typical person in the MRM, is fine with hearing about how male power is wonderful and how important men are to society and how men should get their way but they are loathe to hear that this implies that men owe responsibilities and duties to women or that the problems of the world may indeed be at least partially men’s fault.
