Meaningful Cutlets
April 13, 2010
DAVID BROOKS’ recent words are strangely inspiring. If you recall, Brooks said the quintessential American product is something “coated in moral and psychological meaning.” Our famous conservative columnist believes America will enrich itself, and the rest of the world as well, with these special manufactures.
When you get right down to it, many things could be coated in moral and psychological meaning, don’t you agree? As Brooks said, affluent consumers “crave ” the stuff, and non-affluent consumers probably do too. Well, this got me craving for some myself. Here, inspired by Mr. Brooks, is my own personal culinary variation on his important and timely theme:
Chicken Cutlets à la Brooks
3 chicken breasts, split, skinned and each divided into 4 cutlets
1 cup milk
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup vegetable oil, or more as needed
2 ½ cups Moral and Psychological Meaning
Place the following ingredients in food processor and blend until fine:
1/2 cup each: potato chips, Special K, oreo cookies, roasted peanuts, fermented black beans.
1 tsp. each: cajun seasoning, garlic powder, cinnamon and ground coriander.
1/4 tsp. salt
Pound cutlets until thin. Dry with paper towel. Dip in flour and then milk.
Coat cutlets in moral and psychological meaning.
Heat oil until shimmering. Fry cutlets on one side until brown. Turn and fry other side. Drain on paper towels and serve immediately.
Serve with pineapple-cilantro salsa, or anything you have on hand that might assertively mask the flavor.

You need your own cooking show, a respectable cross between Ann Coulter and Paula Deen we could all stomach. But then, you’d not be “with us” any more. So many times we have seen this in local people who are then elected to state or federal office, as well. They leave and become residents of Washington, DC, complete with “Beltway Lobotomy.” They forget who they truly were and where they came from.
