Semper Fidelis

THERE are many excellent versions on the Internet of “Semper Fidelis,” the United States Marine Corps march written by John Philip Sousa in 1889. Here is a good one and you can hear the Marine Band playing the song in 1909 here.

To our military heroes on Memorial Day, we march for thee.

Rev. James Jackson, who once served in the Marines, writes:

Thank you for the Sousa/USMC tribute. Anytime we got the order to be on parade, the complaints were loud. Boy, were we grumpy. But when you were out there in the dress blues and glanced over at the ladies, the kids, the old men at attention with tears in their eyes, you felt good.

Bruce writes:

Having enjoyed your Souza Semper Fidleis march – here is my favourite British military march (a quick march in fact – for light infantry)

It also makes a really beautiful (although in this context ironic) ending to the movie Breaker Morant – sung by the star Edward Woodward, who would I imagine be an actor of whom you might approve (especially in Callan); as well as a wonderful and very distinctive singer.
