A Moment of Gender Confusion

You never should have posted that “Sexual Fluidity, cont.” entry and Andrej Pejic photo. It was nearly too much for me, and you know how sentimental some of your readers are. It probably killed them.

Fortunately, I was able to reach the picture of my nephew in his hockey uniform and stare at it for a half hour, so I’m all right.

I saved my comments when I first saw that post but after reading Roger G.’s comments I thought I’d chime in.

Unlike most of my conservative friends I have always believed people who gender bend or are homosexual are almost always born that way. We have all known young boys and girls that just didn’t seem to fit their outward sex. These are the people that usually grow up homosexual or potential transsexual.

While I agree with criticizing a society that coddles and encourages the kind of behavior we see with the likes of Andrej Pejic, I don’t think we should hold up individuals, whom we know nothing about, and dangle them for our displeasure like a freak show.

Laura writes:

Yes, that is a good point and perhaps we have overstepped the line into making fun of Pejic himself rather than those who have exploited him and gotten a thrill from his uncertainty. As I said in the previous post, Pejic is to be pitied. I don’t necessarily agree that people are “born that way,” if you mean in the radical sense in which Pejic is transformed, but obviously some individuals have greater inborn inclinations toward homosexual desires and psychological reasons for identifying with the opposite sex. We should have sympathy for these inclinations. We should sympathize in the same way we do with people who have strong compulsions to drink or take drugs. That means recognizing that celebration of homosexuality caters to the compulsion.
