More on the Un-Manning of Christianity

April 25, 2011

LYDIA SHERMAN writes:

For 27 years my husband’s father, who was a preacher himself, attended a monthly lunch in a restaurant, where they met with other preachers from several counties nearby. The wives usually came too, and listened to the speaker of the month address issues of concern to church members. After his parents passed away, he and I began attending this meeting, and now, 19 years later, we are seeing alarming changes in the mannerisms of the ministers.

I quit going five years ago because I couldn’t stand the show of weakness in the men, but my husband has kept attending and has come home with some interesting reports. We have begun to use the word interesting to keep us out of trouble from the P.C. crowd. This month, he met a preacher with an earring in one ear, who was writing a book called The Emergent Elder. Last month one of the speakers looked and acted like a woman. These days, though, women dress a lot like men, so maybe it was not as it appeared.

The way the preachers were hugging each other the last time I attended one of these meetings made me very uncomfortable. What happened to the manly handshake and hat-tip from 40 years ago? Perhaps that is the clue: without the suit with the boutonniere and the hat, a man has no sense of personal expression. That might be another subject to address. The general demeanor of the ministers was weak. They were not men I feel I could rely on to stand for living a good clean life, or stand for truth. It gave me a very uneasy feeling to be around them.
