The Excuse-Makers for the New Savagery
August 12, 2011
THOMAS F. BERTONNEAU writes:
For three weeks, the Left has been making propaganda hay out of Anders Breivik and his blood spree on Utøya. The Left accuses conservatives of having virtually deputized Breivik and of having therefore colluded in what they see as proxy violence on behalf of those who resist total socialization. The Left meanwhile employs actual proxies aplenty who make actual violence aplenty, much of it murderous. It is the direct implication – and it is hardly an implication only – of Richard Sennett’s screed that rioting savages in Greece, France, Britain, or North America are carrying out justice as the liberal establishment defines justice. Sennett’s ideas are entirely consonant with Marxist-Leninist theory, in which the “socially friendly classes” form the spearhead of the proletariat. The “socially friendly classes” would be the criminal element in the society that preys on the hated bourgeoisie and is therefore easily recruited by the radical vanguard to cooperate in the program of destroying society’s productive sector. Sennett’s ideas are also entirely consonant with National Socialist policy, which likewise co-opted street criminals as troops under the cause.
We have no reason not to speak of the Left’s violent proxies.
Laura writes:
Sennett’s editorial is shocking as a veiled threat against taxpayers who reject socialism.
