An Image of Motherhood

Oh, my word! My favorite thing about the article in Slate is the photo of the “mother” – she is bent over, with drooping back, belly and breasts, as she labors under the horrendous and torturous weight of a child. She pouts as she uncomfortably cradles the telephone, no doubt complaining to whomever has the misfortune of finding herself on the other end of the line. Perish the thought that they would post a photo of a radiant, healthy, glowingly pregnant housewife with happy children surrounding her for a book or a snack together!
Just once, I’d love to see a photo of a so-called ‘career mother’ in an article as she truly looks: grey in the face and eyes, sullen, sunken and exhausted in her dead-colored man-uniform with her bunioned, overworked toes exposed at the end of a twelve hour workday.
