Thanks for the great commentary on the Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s Pinkwashing of America. This month a promotional perfume was launched for breast cancer fundraising called Promise Me. What a name. Promise Me. Just a bit suggestive, I’d say. What are we talking, vows? Weird! The ingredients include these toxic chemicals: Galaxolide, a hormone disruptor; Toluene, a neurotoxin; and Oxybenzone, an estrogen mimicker of the type implicated in causing breast cancer. [Komen’s organization has disputed the claim that the perfume is harmful.] They have stopped manufacturing it but the bottles already on the shelves will be staying. What a racket! I am not familiar with the organizaton Think Before You Pink beyond what it states on its website. Here is its mission statement:
Think Before You Pink™, a project of Breast Cancer Action, launched in 2002 in response to the growing concern about the number of pink ribbon products on the market. The campaign calls for more transparency and accountability by companies that take part in breast cancer fundraising, and encourages consumers to ask critical questions about pink ribbon promotions.
