When Dressing Up Is Counter-Cultural

I am grateful to Alan for the beautiful piece about “The Lady in White.” It gave me the boldness I needed to stand my ground on the way my daughters dressed as we went to a baby shower on Saturday afternoon.

My four daughters range in age from six to 17 and there were many cries about “not needing to dress in our Sunday best” and how “everyone else will just be wearing jeans, Mom.” I knew it was the truth, and there was a part of me that was tired of fighting.

But Alan’s words, “she is a symbol of another age and another way of living, a better way of living – an age of virtues now mostly abandoned…,” rang in my ears and I smiled as I told them, “If we don’t dress up for a party, when will we dress up?” We can look like we’re honored to be invited, glad to be a part of welcoming new life into our world, and that the other guests are deemed worthy of our dressing up!

I also remembered (with a bit of chagrin), how 25 plus years ago, my mother wanted me to dress up, to go to our local mall! What goes around, comes around

As our society standards spiral lower and lower, those of us that hold a standard, will be looked at as more and more abnormal. It’s not a bad thing to get used to at a young age.
