I find it odd that a woman like Elizabeth Badinter, who hails from a country as proud of their traditions of food and wine and meal-taking as the French are, would have a problem with breastfeeding. Breastfeeding and social meal-taking are some of the lovely, natural goods of life that rejuvenate and sustain us. Should wine be sold in six-packs? Shall we eat most of our meals in the car, on the run to the next big meeting? Would she rather ingest a nutrition drink for dinner and go back to work, or sit around a table with friends and family and relax over a lovely meal prepared at home with time and care? I doubt it. I bet she enjoys all of those things immensely, just as Sheryl Sandberg runs home to dinner every night with her children. Do as I say, not as I do.
I thought the French were all about slowing down and enjoying life – la vie en rose and all that. This woman is aghast that any mother would take a few years off for a new baby; the sacred rise to the top might be slowed, God help us. Sheryl Sandburg agrees with this and thinks you may not have a job worth going back to. What a pair of elitists.
