It is highly doubtful that Obama meant the off-color joke that has caused such an uproar since yesterday.

The President, as is well known, was speaking at a fundraiser for the LGBT Leadership Council in Beverly Hills. (LGBT’s, for those who have been away, are members of the exalted LGBTQQIP community.) When Obama was introducing the child-like lesbian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, he made the following comments:

I want to thank my wonderful friend who accepts a little bit of teasing  about Michelle beating her in pushups — (laughter) — but I think she  claims Michelle didn’t go all the way down. (Laughter.) That’s what I  heard. I just want to set the record straight — Michelle outdoes me in  pushups as well. (Laughter.) So she shouldn’t feel bad. She’s an  extraordinary talent and she’s just a dear, dear friend — Ellen  DeGeneres. Give Ellen a big round of applause.

Here we see once again Obama’s craven appeals to the female vote. The androgynous Ellen is very popular among American women. In this troubled middle-aged girl, who played the groom at her own make-believe wedding, they find some creepy affirmation of their own girlishness. Rosie O’Donnell, by her sheer ugliness, made every woman feel beautiful. Ellen, by contrast, is the Peter Pan of popular culture. Obama bows and scrapes at her feet in the same way he defers to the squawking women at The View.

However, if one views the video of Michelle doing push ups with DeGeneres (that the First Lady is doing push ups with a lesbian on national TV is an issue that appears to bother no one), the most obvious thing about the two women is that Michelle does not go anywhere near the floor. She does half push ups. So it’s entirely plausible that he meant only what he said, that Michelle doesn’t go all the way down.

Secondly, in the video of Obama’s speech linked above, he appears disturbed and confused by the reaction from the audience. He does not look like someone who has just delivered an intentional one-liner. He even gestures to the crowd to stop laughing.

Whether Obama meant the joke or not, the reaction reveals the mentality of the crowd he was addressing. That’s the real issue. They couldn’t hold themselves in. This is the way they talk among themselves. Why shouldn’t president talk like that too? They honestly think what he said was witty, and, besides, jokes about oral sex are a form of political progress.

It doesn’t take much to get such a crowd to perceive an off-color joke. The appearance of a president at an LGBT fundraiser is in itself an instance of such absurdity and cultural degradation that whatever the President may have said at such an event is of relative unimportance. He was there, and that was bad enough.

One of the interesting aspects of this to note is that, for this crowd, not only is it normal to tell such an off color joke but also to tell such a joke about one’s spouse. For this crowd, exposing someone you love to the crude imaginings of the public is not debase. They have no real sense of decency, and no real sense of what should be private.
