One Giant Leap for, Like, Everyone

I’m sorry to say that I did not remember that today was the anniversary of the moon landing until I saw a news item about it. When I showed it to a friend, he responded, only partly in jest, “Big deal. Some old white dude. Besides, the message he left is sexist.” I then outed myself, and said, “I’m proud he’s white, and I’m proud he’s an American.” Since I sometimes buy this guy beers after work, he just rolled his eyes and walked away. But seriously, who as an American could not be proud? The fact that we do not celebrate this day as a nation is wrong.

I hadn’t thought of it, but I guess it would be impossible for an astronaut landing on the moon today to say what Neil Armstrong said, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind,” or to leave behind a sign that said:

HERE MEN FROM THE PLANET EARTH
FIRST SET FOOT UPON THE MOON
JULY 1969, A.D.
WE CAME IN PEACE FOR ALL MANKIND

I’ll always remember the moon landing. I was sitting on a balcony in Los Angles with friends. We were looking up at the bright moon setting perfectly in sky and at the same time watching and listening to the broadcast on TV. I think that the overused word for that evening was a steady stand-alone “wow”. That was a once in a lifetime event; to be looking at the moon as Americans made the first footprints on it.

I’ll always remember it too. My parents, siblings and I all sat and watched the moon landing together. My mother brought out champagne and fudge.

I had heard that Neil Armstrong had taken Communion on the moon and googled it (that source of all truth-lol!). Here is Snopes research on it.

A portion of Genesis was read during the first orbit around the moon as well.

These men observed the glory of God through His awe-inspiring “heavens” and responded appropriately with reverence to their creator.
