On the Ongoing Dispossession of Whites in Popular Culture

The other day, I was in the bookstore Barnes & Noble. I sat down for a bit of a rest. Next to me, someone had discarded a bunch of fashion/lifestyle magazines. I idly looked at the covers. They were:
LUCKY: Christina Aguilera, a dyed blonde half-Ecuadorian who wisely opts to be identified as “Hispanic”
ALLURE: Sofia Vergara – Hispanic (“32 F and Proud”)
TIME OUT: Zoe Saldana – Afro-Hispanic (identified on the cover as “Actor” Zoe Saldana)
INSTYLE: Jennifer Lopez (Who needs no description)
Scanning these covers, I heard Spanish. I was seated near the “Ficcion” section, where they had stationed a Spanish-speaking clerk, who was catering to Spanish-speaking customers.
By chance, I was looking at a movie the other night on a local channel, An Interrupted Life, a recent thing with Robert Redford that I had never heard of before. Since it was directed by someone whose movies I had once liked, I gave it a chance. It was a modern Western, and had a laundry list of dreary characters: Bitter old white man (played by Redford); Wise old black man (played by Morgan Freeman); Vicious, violent redneck white men (played by white character actors); Beaten down, abused white woman – played by J Lo herself.
What, played by J Lo? What’s a Puerto Rican woman doing in a contemporary Western? She got the part, that’s what. Latter day Hollywood regularly ‘black’ and “brownwashes” contemporary stories, and fiction, putting black and brown actors in parts meant for white actors. In the book upon which the movie was based, which I did not read, I am fairly sure that the character played by Morgan Freeman was white. Yet Hollywood is continually accused of turning “ethnic” parts into white ones, a process the complainers call “whitewashing”. This is a particularly hilarious example of the genre.
It’s screamingly obvious that the reason the part was turned from a black woman to a white woman is because blacks themselves would shriek bloody murder if the truth had been told. The article doesn’t deal with that – they whitewashed a black psychopath. I wish they would give an example of where a black physicist was “whitewashed.” Actually, the trend is completely in the other direction: Hollywood has black and brownwashed whiteness out of existence – except where there is criminal behavior. Then it’s okay to go white.

Diana, small correction. The movie was “An Unfinished Life” not “An Interrupted Life” Also the fashion mags you were flipping through were appealing to a readership that is largely Hispanic is my guess.

Whites are disappearing, they are being out-born. And whites are disappearing figuratively. White people are being replaced as white people historically, by people of color, as if their color had no meaning or relevance and provided no context or truth.
Thor, the Marvel comic is to be made into a movie. The character Heimdall, who is based on the Norse God Heimdallur [ (Old Norse Heimdallr, modern Icelandic Heimdallur) is one of the æsir (gods) in Norse mythology, in the Edda called the “white god” (hvítastr ása “whitest of the aesir Sæm 72ª; hvíta ás “white as” Sn. 104)], is to be played by a dark-skinned black actor named Idris Elba. Maybe they’ll give him flaming red hair?
I’m sure that Elba is a terrific actor, and that he will play the part to perfection. But, playing the part, and looking the part, aren’t the same, are they? Does it mean nothing? Is this insignificant and irrelevant? What if we re-do the mini-series Roots with white actors as the slaves – say the annoying Brad Pitt as Kunta Kinte? What would be the reaction?
Oh, but Buck, didn’t Charlton Heston play the role of a Mexican in Touch of Evil when you were 10 years old?

And right there were colorful plastic bins with read-aloud books for babies, toddlers, and on up to preschool. And they were all in Spanish. Guess we can expect more of the same for the next 75 years or so.

Indeed, as Laura said, that is exactly the point. Maybe I misconstrue but I am always baffled by this type of thought? No different of course than LaRaza appeals to a largely Hispanic constituency or Univision or the Hispanic Caucus or Republican National Hispanic Assembly and on and on. Not only does the growth of all these further show the displacement taking place but also shows how very racial it all is yet way too many whites will run around in circles about being called a racist!

I predict that the USA will end up like Brazil (miscegenation abounding), except the mixed people with African ancestry will be much smaller (around 1-3%) and the Hispanic-European population will skyrocket and account for the majority of mixed people (around 80%) and a couple of biracials will be coming from White-Asian unions (around 17-19%). Also to be frank Christina Aguilera looks like a white girl (even without the blonde hair). Sofia Vergara and Jennifer Lopez remind me of mestizos (part Native Indian, part European) and Zoe Saldana looks like a biracial person with African ancestry.

Thanks to your reader Mrs. P for the correction. I have no idea why I put “interrupted” instead of “unfinished.” The mind works in interesting ways. Maybe I feel that white America is right now in a state of interruption but we are not finished – we have not yet begun to fight.
More substantively, I would like to address your answer to Mrs. P.
Certainly, if the readership is largely Hispanic, that would not invalidate my point about dispossession. But I think that the reality is even worse! I do not think that the readership of the magazines I listed is largely Hispanic. Perhaps the readers consist disproportionately of style-obsessed young Hispanic females, but I do not believe that they consist of a majority of the readership. I just think that the powers-that-be are truckling to them in a way that they would not to blacks.
This is a long story and well beyond my feeble means to explain here, but “Hispandering” has the potential to destroy white culture in a way that black pandering doesn’t. Pandering to blacks is self-limiting in ways that Hispandering isn’t. Blacks self-segregate, perceiving that they have very different needs, tastes, and culture than whites. Whites in power positions realize that, and pull back.
Let me give you a seemingly trivial but in reality profound example. Hair. Sub-Saharan Africans have different hair than whites. It needs special treatment, etc. No matter how attractive, a black model can’t be used as a hair model for whites. But a Hispanic can. They often have beautiful, European-style hair.
It would be an easy thing to replace every white model with a Hispanic one and not interfere with the actual business of selling fashion. As I said, this appears to be a trivial example, but go a bit deeper – are beauty standards *really* trivial? Think of a Hollywood without Carole Lombard, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Ava Gardner, Audrey Hepburn…the list goes on. What if they all looked like Zoe Saldana and J-Lo?
Thus does a people become dispossessed, without noticing it.A clarification, to Alissa, Cristina Aguilera looks like a white girl because….gasp….she is a white girl.
Her mother is an American Heinz 57 German-Irish-Dutch Anglo-Saxon mix,and her Ecuadorian father is undoubtedly either completely European ora mostly European mestizo. If she has any non-white blood, it’s a thimbleful of Indian blood. I said that she “wisely” identifies as Hispanic because it sells, no matter how ridiculous it is. That’s show biz.But at the end of the day, true wisdom is being yourself, and Ms. Aguilera is, I hate to tell her, white. A shame, and a pity, but she’s “color challenged.”

Whites are disappearing. Our local libraries have long had an over-large section of Spanish books for children. These are all in pristine, unread condition. The Spanish language videos are the things that are checked out . . . and then disappear. They’ve now added lots of Chinese language materials for all the Asians in the community. Anytime I cannot avoid the library (how ironic; the place I adored as a child and teen is now somewhere I abhor), I must pass black and Asian teens playing video games on the computer terminals, and old Chinese men and women with their Chinese papers spread out over the reading tables. In the meantime, most books I request are unavailable except via inter-library loan, and the wait for new, popular titles can be many months. Although I’m in Texas, most of the librarians here have East Coast accents. They’ve also started hiring an increasing number of Indian and black assistants.
I’ve taken to driving about 20 minutes out of my way to visit a library in a neighboring community. During the day, at least, it is a lot quieter, and it does not yet have the large foreign-language sections. The librarians there also tend to order a much larger collection of Christian fiction. They also seem to buy more copies of newer books, so I don’t have to wait months to read something. One thing I’ve noticed, however, is an increasing number of black women’s fiction. These used to be packaged as a traditional romance paperback, albeit with black characters illustrating the cover. Now, however, since most whites presumably bypass these offerings, I’ve noticed they have more nondescript covers, with hearts or flowers, and only by carefully reading the back cover, or in some cases the first page, can one clearly establish this is black fiction (by the characters’ names, the setting, the lifestyles, etc.).
No area of life escapes the standard race-replacement/miscegenation memes. It takes constant vigilance for oneself, and even more so for one’s children.

Sheila did suggest that the mere sight of black and Asian teens and elderly Chinese was objectionable and irritating. I don’t sympathize with that. I think if one is living in a multi-racial community, one shouldn’t entertain or articulate hostility to the people with whom you live if they are doing nothing wrong. I do think Sheila went too far in objecting to the mere presence of the Chinese elderly reading their newspapers. But I sympathize very much with her complaint that the library accommodates Asian and Hispanic readers by providing material in their native language and with the fact that she feels like a foreigner in her own community because she and other whites are outnumbered by people from all over the globe.
However, even if the presence of a large number of foreigners or non-whites in her library was unpleasant to Sheila, it is not un-Christian to say that the transformation is unwelcome, and I believe that was Sheila’s point. If a black who lived in a black neighborhood saw it gradually taken over my whites, and expressed the same sadness and frustration at the loss of the neighborhood’s identity, I suspect Mrs. Campbell would not object. It is only whites who are denied a sense of identity, not other races, who proudly defend it.

But what Sheila is describing is simply government coercion. I see it too. Libraries are taxpayer supported in many counties.

Thanks, Laura. Your comment, in partial defense/explanation of mine, was spot-on. As I believe I’ve pointed out in other comments, I spent a number of years living, working, and traveling overseas. Totally aside from the fact that standard liberal “shaming language” has no effect on me, I’ve probably experienced far more true “diversity” than someone like Mrs. Campbell could imagine. In every case, I went out of my way to accommodate myself to the local culture, including learning as much of the language as I could and never demanding anyone follow my American customs. It would never have occurred to me to saunter into a local library (I honestly don’t know if a number of these countries had any; I did use the library often in England) and demand they provide me with reading material in my own language. For what it’s worth, English is one of Singapore’s official languages, but I fed my reading addiction by frequent visits to the local used bookstore, which was filled with locals and expats.
The elderly Chinese here are largely on Supplemental Social Security; for the majority of those who are unaware of what an abomination this program is, let me explain that it enables elderly foreigners, who have never worked a day in the United States in their lives, to emigrate here and immediately start drawing taxpayer assistance (although, at least officially, those who qualify for immigrant visas must prove they will not become a public charge). I found Chinese culture interesting in Singapore; I do not enjoy the proliferation of cram schools and the typical Asian lack of civic participation here in Texas.
As you note, while DWLs (disingenuous white liberals) will jump to support black neighborhoods and culture, they are even quicker to condemn any pride in white, European heritage. I enjoyed my travels and learning about the varied peoples God made and the cultures endogenous to those peoples. I did not like returning home and feeling like an alien in what was once my own nation. I make no apologies for my views.

I don’t speak for Sheila, nor does she need my defense. I see that she has explained herself admirably. May I add a word on the subject, directed specifically to Mrs. Campbell?
It is not the mere presence of persons of different colors and cultures that bothers me. It is the fact that I, as a native, amexpected to adjust to them, and not the other way around.
My grandparents emigrated to the US in the early 1900s, part of that huge wave of Eastern European and Southern Italian emigration. The main languages of this huge wave of emigration were: Russian, Polish,Bohemian, Slovakian, German, Yiddish, and the myriad mutually incomprehensible Italian dialects. And there were many other languages – I have only mentioned the main ones.
The emigrants themselves usually didn’t learn English, but their children did. No one even assumed their children would assimilate – it was taken for granted! It was as unconscious as the fact that we breathe oxygen, or that your body obeys the laws of gravity even if you do not know what the word gravity means, if you jump out a window.
My own parents told me, and I have read innumerable accounts, that immigrant children soaked up the dominant native culture, in the libraries, as well as the public schools. Not all kids went to public schools – some went to parochial – but everyone went to the library. The dominant, native, Anglo-American culture was transmitted to kids via the written word. And I still think that the written word is the true motor of our culture: witness the power of Harry Potter, Hunger Games, etc. (Whether these are good or bad is another issue – no one doubts their power.)
No one expected Italian or Bohemian literature in the library! What an absurd thought!
As for the current inundation, I have nothing to add to Laura’s words other than assent, only this. If the current wave of immigration brought positive things, I could excuse it. But it doesn’t. It brings, as Laura said with respect to the feminist movement, drama and glamor to the few, misery to the many. “Diversity” makes Yale a more colorful place. The elites get to eat in better restaurants. The rest of us get to compete with them, and daily watch our culture remade in their image. So pardon me if I am not overjoyed by becoming a minority amongst aliens.
