SSPX and Rome

November 5, 2012

DANIEL S. writes:

It has been widely reported in the liberal press that discussion between the Vatican and the traditionalist Catholic group, the Society of Saint Pius X, has irrevocably broken down, with blame being placed on the SSPX for being retractable and reactionary. Reports of the demise of the ongoing dialogue have been greatly exaggerated. Indeed the Vatican is now awaiting the response from the traditionalist society concerning a doctrinal preamble submitted for their consideration. The SSPX has requested more time to review and consider the preamble, with the Vatican stating that the ongoing process must be met with patience and perseverance. It would seem neither side has abandoned dialogue.

Another hopeful sign is the expulsion of the notorious, and arguably crank Bishop Richard Williamson from the SSPX. Williamson, whose previous statements were tantamount to Holocaust denial and anti-Semitism, had represented a hardline faction in the SSPX against reconciliation with the Vatican. His departure may aid Bishop Fellay and those in the SSPX who genuinely seek reconciliation with Rome.

I’m not sure it’s accurate to say that Bishop Fellay seeks reconciliation with Rome. Rather, I would say that Fellay desires that Rome come to a full and complete understanding of the damage done in the wake of Vatican II. Once that understanding has taken place – and it will not be heard as a shout but as a whisper – the reconcilation will naturally follow. And the SSPX can bring their gorgeous Masses to many, many more souls. Prayers to the Holy Father and the SSPX.

Here is an interview with Fellay.
