Toward a Counter-Culture

IN CONTINUATION of the discussion about refusing state marriage licenses, Jeremy Morris writes:

America has been reduced to a culture filled with distractions, light shows that do nothing more than hold our attention just long enough to cause us to forget our duty to God almighty. It is the “Vanity Fair” of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. Its days are numbered, the evil that is rampant can only destroy itself eventually. The hold it has on people will eventually be loosened. Similar, to how the beauty and distractions offered by a luxury cruise liner can only hold the passengers attention so long before they realize it is sinking. No matter what the people in authority over the ship say, the discovery of its true fate is inevitable. The crew down below are the first to realize with absolute certainty that the ship is bound for a watery grave. The story of the Titanic is a great metaphor for what is happening to America as we speak. Many will perish in the confusion, many more will perish in denial. My sincere prayer is that Christians will break the hold that “Vanity Fair” has upon them, remember their duty to God, and seek him before it is too late.

It is interesting to note that when John Bunyan wrote “The Pilgrims Progress” he was in prison. Most people who have read the book know that. What they may not know is why he was in prison. He was in prison because he refused to obey the king’s law. Which law you ask? The law that stated he must obtain a license from the king to preach. Christians today have forgotten their heritage. This sort of strife between Christians and the State is common in the Church history. The watered down Christianity that is dominant in the mainstream is repulsive! It is part of the light show produced by the State as a distraction. It is lead around by the State like a dog on a leash. Constant compromise is made, it rarely takes a stand on principle. And if it does it will only continue to do so if the State shows no disapproval. The incorporated 501(c)3 churches stand in direct defiance of God’s word, particularly Proverbs 16:8.

The mainstream Christian Church is simply the State’s pet. And the State treats it as such, teaching it various tricks and parading it around as some sort of status symbol. All in all, its action or inaction are for the sole benefit and amusement of the State.

The Christian subculture is a different story altogether. It’s more like the State’s dirty little secret or skeleton in the closet if you will. It’s kept in isolation because eliminating it altogether at this point would be far too public. And therefore counterproductive to the State’s purposes. This subculture does exist but is little known or heard from. Why is that exactly?

Well, let’s take a look at the prefix “sub” for a moment. According to Webster’s 1828 dictionary, the prefix “sub” is defined as follows: ” SUB, a Latin preposition, denoting under or below, used in English as a prefix, to express a subordinate degree.”

With that definition of the prefix “sub,” we can take the word subculture to mean subordinate to the dominant culture. That would explain the silence we hear from the well established Christian subculture. It operates on its own principles in accordance with God’s law in most cases. As long as it causes no trouble for the mainstream culture at large. Any trouble it does cause is quickly dealt with, for fear of an outbreak.

In America’s advanced state of cultural degeneration what we truly seek is a Christian counter-culture. The word “counter” being defined by Webster’s 1828 dictionary as follows: ” COUNTER 1. Contrary; in opposition; in an opposite direction. “

What we truly seek is a real fire for God, an awakening. An uncompromising Christian counter-culture in direct opposition to the dominant culture in America. One that stands firm on God’s law, and the principles within it. And is willing to suffer the consequences administered by the State for doing so. It was on this strife, sacrifice and suffering that the true Christian Church was built! This brothers and sisters is what revolutionized the world in history. It is time for another revolution! May God have mercy on us if we settle for a subculture.

“Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the veil shall be taken away. Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. ” -2 Corinthians 3:16-17

Kevin M. writes:

A little over a year ago, I fell into a conversation with a couple men who are members of churches in the Knoxville, TN, area, on a blog not dissimilar to yours. They told me that their pastors refuse to marry any of their congregation who obtain a state marriage license. The reasoning was that marriage is an institution wholly under the auspices of the church, and that the conventions of presumptive paternity and unilateral divorce (among other things) are antithetical to the teachings of Christ. Further, the pastors warned their congregation that as marriage licenses are documents of public record, the pastors make the practice of periodically visiting the town clerks to request copies of marriage licenses for various membes of their churches, and if a couple is found to have obtained a state-issued marriage license, those couples would be banned from attending church again.

To me, these people are serious about the institution of marriage. The men went on to say that if a marriage is having trouble (infidelity, domestic violence, child abuse, etc.), the elders of the church–men and women–pay a visit to the couple and “sort it out.” Sounds infinitely better and effective than some bogus social worker playing marriage counselor, or worse, a visit from the police or divorce lawyer.

I don’t know all the ins and outs of what makes marriage succeed, but I certainly have no faith in government-managed human relationships. If segments of our society were to abandon the present structure of marriage, it can only lead to something wildly more sustainable and domestically sound.
