Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate

Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate

THE Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate comprise the second largest Catholic religious congregation that regularly celebrates the Tridentine Mass. Pope Pius V promulgated the missal for the Tridentine mass in 1570 and it was in effect for almost 400 years, until 1969. Catholic Culture reports that Pope Francis has consented to a decree forbidding the friars from using the ancient Latin liturgy without specific approval. Rorate Caeli also reports on the news.

Henry McCulloch writes:

I’m no seer, but this is exactly the kind of thing I feared when I learned that the next Pope was going to be a Latin American. About the Church in Latin America, I have the impression even the local “conservatives” have accepted the leftist basics of Liberation Theology. To put it in an American context, think of the “Catholicism” of Los Angeles’s disgraced Cardinal Roger Mahony. Mahony is effectively a proponent of Liberation Theology: the essence of being Christian is to be a social justice activist, not a sacramentally rooted worshipper of the One God. The Traditional Mass, by its very existence, resists that kind of politicizing and liberalizing the Church. I wondered then what Jorge Mario Bergoglio really thought about restoring the Traditional Mass – and with it a more traditional understanding of Catholicism – to the Church. I’m afraid we’re starting to find out.
