Obama and Sochi

August 7, 2013

HENRY McCULLOCH writes:

Yesterday I commented on Frank Bruni’s New York Times column and Bruni’s dream that U.S. athletes may engage in a pro-sodomite disruption at the opening of next year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, to protest Russia’s statutes — unobjectionable in a healthy society — against homosexualist propaganda and proselytising.

Maybe Barack Hussein Obama has been reading Bruni or the NYT op-ed by sodomite activist Harvey Fierstein. In a softball interview with Jay Leno, Leno said the [Russian] laws had “shocked” him and compared Russia’s arrests of homosexual protesters to Nazi Germany’s extermination of Jews and homosexuals. No hint of hyperbole there. Unblinkingly accepting the risible comparison as valid, Obama – as his paymasters require – took his cue:

“I’ve been very clear that when it comes to universal rights, when it comes to people’s basic freedoms, that whether you are discriminating on the basis of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation, you are violating the basic morality that I think should transcend every country, and I have no patience for countries that try to treat gays or lesbians or transgender persons in ways that intimidate them or are harmful to them.”

Thus encouraged, Leno turned to the Sochi Olympics. Kevin Rector of The Baltimore Sun reports:

Leno then asked Obama whether he thinks Russia’s laws will affect the Olympics.

Obama responded by saying he thinks Russia and President Vladimir Putin understand most countries participating in the Olympics won’t tolerate discrimination against gays and lesbians.

“They’re athletes. They’re there to compete, and if Russia wants to uphold the Olympic spirit, then every judgment should be made on the track or in the swimming pool or on the balance beam, and people’s sexual orientation shouldn’t have anything to do with it.”

OK, so Obama may have been confusing the Winter Olympics for the Summer Olympics — but you get the drift.

OK, we get the drift, all right.  This episode tells us nothing about Russia, but a lot – none of it good – about the moral state of America’s “leaders.”  Latter-day America isn’t just drifting into being a latter-day Sodom. America is paddling flat-out into a Class 6 rapids of pervasive perversity.  Who knows what wreckage will come bobbing out at the bottom.

The possibility of a U.S. boycott of the Sochi Olympics at the bidding of the homosexualist lobby, something I was inclined to dismiss as ridiculous, is looking more probable every day.

So President Obama said: “They’re athletes. They’re there to compete, and if Russia wants to uphold the Olympic spirit, then every judgment should be made on the track or in the swimming pool or on the balance beam.”

Just so. But by the same token, if they’re there to compete, any political displays they may be tempted (or directed?) to enact on behalf of ‘gay rights’ — pulling out rainbow handkerchiefs at the reviewing stand, for example, as someone has already suggested — are equally out of order. And if they misuse the opportunity they’re being given, and in doing so violate Russian law, why shouldn’t they be answerable to that law? I know this is obvious. I’d just like to think that it’s obvious to your President.
