Quebec Attempts to Restrict Islamic Headcoverings

September 16, 2013

MS. FOX writes:

We Canadians have age-old rivalries between the Anglophones of western Canada, and the Francophones of the east. Quebec has, several times over the years, wanted to become its own nation. So far, it has failed in this project, but now it has more pressing concerns.

Islam is one of them. In Quebec, a new “Charter of Values” has been unveiled by the Parti Quebeçois and it would forbid civil servants to wear overt religious symbols such as head scarves, burkas and large crucifixes on the job. According to Maclean’s, thousands of Muslims have protested. It has not been the first incident. Earlier in 2013, there was controversy about Islamic sheikhs wearing headgear during soccer games. According to the official rules, they were not allowed to wear the coverings for their safety and others’, but they did not want to hear it. A protest was launched, and a thousand Muslims wore headgear to a game.

And the charge? Racism and discrimination, as well as “Islamophobia.” Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney along with the Federal Government wishes to overthrow Quebec’s proposed charter. Muslims have made threats that if it is not overthrown, they will leave (not too bad, considering) yet clearly if they do not get what they want, they will resort to violence.

An Ontario hospital has responded to the Quebec charter by advertising for nurses who wear headscarves. In Britain, Muslim women are not required to follow hospital protocol for hygiene. Also, cases of elder abuse, neglect, and medical malpractice increase with Muslim doctors.

Islam has already taken root in Canada, with one-fifth of our population foreign born. Our churches have closed, but our mosques will be as grand as ever. The crescent moon is ever on the horizon.

There are some inaccuracies in this post. The soccer players were Sikhs not Muslims. The legislation would restrict kippas or yarmulkes as well as crucifixes, turbans, burkas and niqabs. Most speculation in English Canada is that the goal is really to ban the niqab (for which there is some support) but to avoid appearing to oppose one religion in particular everyone is getting hit. It’s a strange example of liberalism combined with ethno-nationalism. Par for the course in Quebec, I’m afraid.

Thank you for the correction. I was a little confused by that reference to sheiks wearing headgear. As for the yarmulkes, the list of forbidden items in the above post did not include all items to be forbidden.

It seems pretty obvious that the only motive for this measure is to prevent Muslims from wearing face veils and especially the burka, which makes it difficult to identify someone. Crucifixes and yarmulkes were thrown in to deceive.
