A Pope for the Black Sabbath Crowd

THE Rolling Stone, once the flagship of really cool people, weighs in with the latest liberal puff piece on “Pope” Francis. The magazine that loves Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd pays Francis the ultimate compliment, comparing him more than once to that other spiritual leader of the Western world, Bill Clinton. According to writer Mark Binelli, who considers people like Newt Gingrich and Cardinal Timothy Dolan to be theological hard-liners, the homophobic, patriarchal, medieval organization that is the Catholic Church is finally seeing — a little bit — the error of its ways. Having put aside the “staunch traditionalist” Pope Benedict XVI, it has elected a hippy pontiff. Binelli understands the “pope” better than many supposed Catholics, who say Francis is constantly misinterpreted and didn’t really say what he just said.

Stay tuned. The Rolling Stone will soon be unveiling its translation of the New Testament on mobile app. Hear the good news about climate change, women’s ordination and transgender redemption. Learn how to be Catholic while hating everything the Church stands for.

Paul writes:

Want to hear and to read a scathing indictment of Rolling Stone, a grotesque thing that I disliked as soon as it came out?  You now have the links.  Surely I loved a number of 60s hits by the Stones, but taking them seriously was not an idea. I though Mick was the ugliest rock musician I had ever seen. Sure they could repeat some wise things later such as, “You can’t always get what you want . . . But if you try sometimes you just might find You get what you need.”  The analogy is Mozart.  His music is great, but he was not a fine human being, as far as I know.

I did like Black Sabbath’s first album and one song off their second album.  But I never took them seriously.  I knew it was all show.  It was all about music.  Rarely did I pay attention to lyrics.

As I have said before, I did not like rock concerts but went because friends wanted me to go.  The only rock concert I did like, sort of, was the Turtles in 69.  They were extraordinary singers and also songwriters despite their goofy name.  But the public address system could not reach the balcony.  I was very disappointed.  Here they do Bob Dylan’s It Ain’t Me Babe.  This was not their most talented performance, but I don’t have time to search among the many songs they wrote.
