From a Society of Grace to a Society of Disorder

Regarding our situation, the writer Solange Hertz summed it all up in one of her books:
In its youth the sinful earth was renewed by the Flood, only to relapse into universal disorder. Eventually God became man in ordered to renew it by His Blood, generating a new society of grace on earth, and in due time the political miracle called Christendom literally materialized from the petition “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven,” which He commanded be addressed daily to our Father “Who are in Heaven.” Like Israel of old, however, it too began disintegrating. First Byzantium fell away from the Church, and then other parts of Church began decomposing into Protestantism. Philosophy parted company with her mistress theology, and great heresiarchs in the temporal order arose. Men like Giotto, Bacon, Galileo and Bach excised the arts, natural science and music from the executive positions they occupied in Christian society and set them to plying their trades as ends in themselves..’ars gratia artis’ was coined as watchword, and soon the people began ruling in the name of kings and princes. Economics declared its independence from the politics it was meant to serve and began dictating world policy, to the point that now, as St. John prophesied in the Apocalypse, “merchants are the great men of the earth.” Labor and management having parted company, finance reigns supreme.
Just as democracy was drawing up the final divorce ratifying the rift between the Holy Catholic Church and human society, the Mother of God appeared in France at La Salette. On September 19, 1846, at a crucial period when the bond uniting the spiritual and the temporal in the social life of every individual and institution in Christendom was being judicially severed by the separation of Church and state, she came to prepare her children for another cleavage more calamitous yet, “Rome will lose the Faith,” and she, predicting at the same time that “the Church will be eclipsed, the world will be in consternation.” She pled, “Do battle, children of the light, you the few who see thereby, for the time of times, the end of ends is at hand!”
