Medieval Lady Mass
September 25, 2015
THE Lady Mass was the Catholic Mass celebrated daily in many parts of medieval Britain, when devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, to whom the Mass was dedicated, flourished. On Saturday, the Lady Mass was typically celebrated at the principal altar, as opposed to a side altar on weekdays, and was the main Mass of the day. Here is a 2011 reenactment of a sixteenth-century Lady Mass in a Welsh church. The liturgy is essentially the same as the Traditional Latin Mass as we know it today. Here is an excellent introduction. See more here. Although the intention is to honor the Mother of God, the form and ritual are the same as on other days.
