NYT: Little Girls Can Be Whores for Halloween
October 19, 2015
JEWISH author Leora Tanenbaum writes in The New York Times (full article here) that it’s fine if preteen girls look like sluts on Halloween. As long as they feel good about themselves, it’s fine:
If you’re worried about your daughter’s choice, sexy or not, the direct approach (a nonjudgmental “why?) could be a way into a discussion, or parents may want to start by talking about what “the other girls” will be wearing. Either way, recognizing why a girl may choose to dress sexy for Halloween can help a parent to set firm [translation: no guidelines] but reasonable limits on the costume and how much of her body she exposes, depending on her age and your values. And if a sexy costume leads to unwanted attention or shaming, both daughters and parents have to remember that neither girl nor costume is to blame. No one, no matter what she wears, deserves to be harassed or bullied — and those who believe that a girl is “asking for it” because of her attire are absolutely wrong.
In the end, even if you wish that her costume were less sexualized, remember what’s really important: how she feels about herself, and whether she recognizes the larger sexist forces at play.
Tanenbaum works for Planned Parenthood. She might suggest that little girls dress up as butchers (okay, sexy butchers). That would be a good feminist costume.

Bert Perry writes:
Sexy butchers with keys to a Lamborghini and maybe throw some chicken livers into the pockets for gross out effect?
I’m kinda embarrassed that I could add to the discussion this way.
Laura writes:
Or a sexy lab technician with a scalpel and some severed baby heads?
And then there’s always a sexy saleswoman from StemExpress or a sexy doctor from Planned Parenthood.
Emily writes:
You all forgot Sexy Aborted Fetus. You should all really spend some more time hanging around Millennials.
On the other hand, maybe not.
