Trump’s Reversal on Immigration
August 25, 2016
FEW CANDIDATES have been catapulted to a presidential nomination so exclusively on one issue as Donald Trump, who is running because he promised the American people that he would stop illegal immigration and indicated that he would send violators of the law home. Millions of people, at the risk of being slandered as bigots and Nazis, supported him as a result. They supported him not because in most cases they were categorically against immigration, but because they were against excessive, ruinous immigration.
Now, however, Trump has made statements reversing his stand.
In a public appearance on television last night, the Republican candidate did not “soften” his stand, as some are contending. He reversed it.
Trump said he would offer illegal immigrants a “path to legalization.” Another term for that is amnesty, however much Trump may deny the term. Ann Coulter, call your publisher immediately. You have a lot of explaining to do.
NPR reports:
Trump indicated in a town hall with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, which aired Wednesday night, that he would be in favor of a path to legalization for immigrants in the U.S. illegally.
“No citizenship,” he said. But he added, “Let me go a step further — they’ll pay back-taxes; they have to pay taxes; there’s no amnesty, as such, there’s no amnesty, but we work with them.”
He continued: “Now, everybody agrees we get the bad ones out. But when I go through and I meet thousands and thousands of people on this subject, and I’ve had very strong people come up to me, really great, great people come up to me, and they’ve said, ‘Mr. Trump, I love you, but to take a person who’s been here for 15 or 20 years and throw them and their family out, it’s so tough, Mr. Trump,’ I have it all the time! It’s a very, very hard thing.”
Now close your eyes and repeat these words. I think you will agree, this could be Obama speaking.
Now, let’s just say, for the sake of argument, that Trump was suffering from a momentary lapse, and did not realize that he was betraying most of the people who have supported him. Fine. But what’s to prevent him from having another …. lapse once he is elected?
As I have said many times, Donald Trump cannot be trusted. A Hillary presidency is a frightening and terrible prospect, but I am willing to bet: you will never see that wall during a Trump presidency.

Wrong. $1,000. And I’ll give 2:1 odds. Bet?

A thousand bucks?!! Who do you think I am? Donald Trump?
How about ten?

Shoot. What lousy news.
But let’s examine the seeming betrayal. He talked about families here twenty years who have committed no crimes. That is not near the majority of the illegals. And he still intends to build the wall and enforce our immigration laws. Huge improvements. Ann pointed out he still will build the wall and enforce our immigration laws in large part. As an attorney, she knows that enforcing some laws scrupulously is unjust.
Excessive and illegal Immigration opponents are so angry (as I am) that they are forgetting the practicalities of politics. Me, I would put them out nevertheless. Why is it so horrible to make criminals (illegals) return to Mexico, a prosperous country in the top 15%? Mexico is not a poor country.
And we need to be practical. I don’t know which group Trump is trying to garner a small fraction of votes from. I expect it is independents (that is, chronic fence sitters and ignorant people) and maybe tinier fractions of other voters. He knows it looks, as of today, this could be a razor thin election. I am sure this will not garner a single extra vote from Hispanics and other non-White and non-Christian immigrants.
I expect he will clarify his position consistent with this analysis. He knows he is dead if conservatives sit home.
But let’s say he allows those who have been here five years, have been working, and have no criminal record. He still intends to build the wall and deport those now trying to enter, not to mention stopping the Muslim immigration and other immigration based on sound policies.
And more importantly remember he won’t be appointing lousy Supreme Court justices who would fail to uphold the Bill of Rights or to overturn Roe v. Wade, assuming the Stupid Party holds onto the Senate. This is a reminder to support Republican senators. This is the most critical reason why conservatives need to turn out for Trump and senators. Without the Bill of Rights, you won’t be allowed to have this Website, for example. It will be hate speech.
