The Frontline in the War on Food

One way I entertain myself in line at the grocery store is to look at what other folks have in their carts. It’s really sad what I see most of the time. Here’s a tour of a grocery cart that wouldn’t be unusual at all:
· Gatorade — It has electrolytes, doncha know? This stuff should, at most, be consumed by athletes in small quantities. If you aren’t sweating a lot, it is nothing but sugar.
· Soda — No need to explain that. If you drink soda regularly, take a month or two off and try one. You’ll realize how bad they taste.
· Packaged crackers — Even the crackers that advertise themselves as healthy are filled with sugar.
· TV Meals — Who knows how these things are even made? They’re filled with sugar too.
· Lunch meats — You might think these are made of the “other” parts of animals. I wish that was the whole truth, because then they would be somewhat nutritious. They’re made from the other parts plus a gross chemical slurry.
· White bread and baked goods — Filled with sugar and risen with science lab chemistry. No thanks.
· Yogurt — The stuff your grandma ate on the farm was good, but the modern stuff is just ice cream with a different consistency and chemicals to achieve that consistency.
· Breakfast cereal — Even the plain ones are filled with sugar, never mind the Fruitloops, Lucky Charms, and Double Chocolate Cocoa Bombs.
It’s very typical to see carts with half of the above items and a few healthy things, like fresh fruit, meat, and eggs.
Every now and then, I’ll eat things from the list above. But it is tragic to see people whose primary diet is made up of these things, and the worst part is that they think all of these items actually have health benefits!
