Chaos in Buffalo Schools

December 1, 2016

A TOTAL of 85 languages are spoken in Buffalo public schools. From The Buffalo News:

Yakub speaks Somali; Faustina Palmatier speaks Burmese; Laura Revilla speaks Spanish; Eh Knyaw speaks Karen; Nagham Ar-Rawi speaks Arabic; and Lamin Tamang speaks Nepali. All six share space in a room near the entrance to the [language] center.

Dan R. writes:

According to Newt Gingrich, speaking in a 2011 CNN candidates forum, there are yet far more languages spoken in the Chicago and Miami schools:

“When you realize that there are over 200 languages spoken in the Chicago school system, there are over 180 languages spoken at Miami-Dade Junior College, it’s why I favor English as the official language of government.”

Buffalo being much smaller than Chicago or Miami, the difference stands to reason. Notice, of course, that in his comment Gingrich doesn’t criticize the multitude of languages PER SE, for as an American exceptionalist the answer is simple: make English our official language. At least it’s an improvement from what he said around the year 2000, when he used the Chicago example as something positive, on the order of students learning from each other!

Are we not now the equivalent of the Tower of Babel?
