Neo-Conned Again

April 7, 2017

DONALD TRUMP started a new war in the Middle East yesterday — exactly one hundred years after the U.S entered World War I and less than three months into his presidency. He launched airstrikes against Syria late in the day, breaking his campaign promise to avoid foreign interventions and to put America first. Reports of an alleged chemical attack by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday, an allegation which defies belief, were the cause, Trump said. There was no time for investigation, certainly not for the level of investigation needed before going to war. [See CNN anchor berate Congressman Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky) for saying the perpetrators are not yet known.]

Trump is the neo con-man that some of us have always suspected him of being.

The reality TV star turned president laid it on thick in explaining this military action:

On Tuesday, Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad launched a horrible chemical weapons attack on innocent civilians using a deadly nerve agent.

Assad choked out the lives of innocent men, women and children. It was a slow and brutal death for so many. Even beautiful babies were cruelly murdered in this very barbaric attack.

No child of god (sic) should ever suffer such horror.

In one day — one day — Trump is fully confident of who was responsible for the alleged attack.

Tonight I ordered a targeted military strike on the airfield in Syria from where the chemical attack was launched.

It is in this vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons.

This is not what Trump thought in 2013 after another alleged gas attack by Assad which was proven to be the work of U.S.-backed rebels.

Syria is no threat to this country. It is not in our vital national interest to go to war in the Middle East or cause friction with Russia. Talal Barazi, governor of Syria’s Homs province, where the airstrikes occurred, said the airbase attacked by the American military yesterday was used by the Syrian regime for operations against ISIS forces.

This raises a question: Would even Hillary Clinton have taken us to war this quickly?

I think you meant:

“exactly one hundred years after the US entered World War I”

I mentioned the fact of that anniversary to Mrs. S. yesterday, adding that I hoped Congress would not see fit to commemorate the event with an act of comparable stupidity. Turns out… Congress was unnecessary.
