We used to have to pay a quarter and walk into a circus tent to witness the type of people one can see walking around the mall today. Obviously it’s not Christian to turn away people who have tattoos, but, this is not what people in this culture need to hear from Francis. I talk to people of my generation (28-35) frequently and what I’ve deduced is they’re purely driven by aligning themselves with institutions that validate their favorite vice. This has more to do with narcissism and vanity than it does one’s “individuality” because it’s a low-effort, lazy way of impressing your views on others.

If they want to “express” themselves, go to Walgreens and buy a composition notebook, some pens and sit down and write something. Go to an art class. Pick up learning a musical instrument. Paying someone to express their artwork on your flesh is not you expressing yourself, no matter how you slice it.

It hurts me to see young people damage their pure skin with tattoos. The prevalence of tattoos is a prime reason it’s so difficult to find a woman suitable for marriage. If you view the tattoo process with a microscopic lens you’ll see the needle actually makes thousands of cuts into the skin that cause bleeding. We find it disturbing when suicidal people cut themselves with razors, why doesn’t our culture feel the same about people who pay top money to have someone else do it?

Francis’s excuse making for this pagan behavior is pathetic–“sense of belonging”. That’s why we dip our finger-tips into holy water every Mass and cross ourselves. That’s our marker of acceptance that only the Lord can see. In a world where people are quick to label you, do we really need to label ourselves?
