Sharing Isn’t Always Caring

Is it just me being overly suspicious, or do these public boxes of books for children seem like potential threats to their innocence? If our children were walking home from school and passed one of these I would tell them they could not participate in this, and check to be sure they hadn’t.

I don’t know where the idea started but if it came from the national government libraries then for sure they are suspect as being part of the woke agenda that is targeting children; innocent enough to begin with but an absolute resource for wrong materials being spread around.

Every time I see one I feel troubled.

Found this below on their website. There were other statements as well, similar to this. We are correct in our discomfort with them. They are a potential menace. Anyone who might put one up has to be a liberal, at the very least, and open to “diversity”.  A friend of mine who lives in the city of Lancaster says they are very common in her area. Some are advertised as “adult/children” sites.

“Championing diverse books.
Through our Read in Color program, LFL makes books available representing BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other diverse voices to promote understanding, empathy, and inclusion.”

I’ve noticed similar share-a-book boxes before and never miss an opportunity to see what titles may appear in them. There is a similar “take a book, leave a book” display at a farmers co-op that my children and I visit frequently. We just acquired a fascinating book about tigers this afternoon. I fully understand the concern that D. has in allowing children to access this uncurated selection of books. If my children were older and encountered such things unaccompanied I’d be a bit concerned myself. On the flip side, what a wonderful way to spread the truth! We should take advantage of such opportunities to share the good, the true and the beautiful with our neighbors and their children through our own donations, maybe books, maybe messages slipped between the covers.
