Why Americans Deserve the Therapeutic State
February 23, 2021
Although we may not know it, we have, in our day, witnessed the birth of the Therapeutic State.
— Thomas Szasz, Law, Liberty, and Psychiatry (1963), p. 212
By prescribing literal treatments for diseases and metaphorical treatments for disagreements and by assuming the power to impose such treatments on those who do not submit to them voluntarily, the Therapeutic State aspires to become one of the most hideous tyrannies in human history.
— Thomas Szasz, Heresies (1976), p. 183

Anyone who thinks that Dr. Szasz exaggerated in statements like these above obviously has not been paying attention. Tyrants, thugs, and totalitarians will use the Therapeutic State as a pretext and means by which to seize the limitless, unchecked power over our lives that traditional political or Constitutional constraints denied to them—and they will do so in the name of Doing Good. The current Lockdown (read: Takedown) is merely the most dramatic and far-reaching example of their lust for power.
That people today are dying or being made sick by alleged “vaccines” for an alleged “virus” whose very existence is open to debate is a predictable consequence of Americans’ naïve, childlike trust in doctors, “experts,” and do-gooders.
In 2014 I wrote (on paper, not online) three lengthy essays under the heading “On the Evil Done by Do-Gooders.” I wrote about the effects of that evil on decent people who made the mistake of trusting do-gooders. I did not then expect Americans to provide as many concrete examples of that evil as they are providing today by dint of their uncritical acceptance of the Great Flu Fraud and its corollary frauds.
The arrogance of many doctors has been known for centuries. It was discussed by Dr. Robert Mendelsohn in his book Confessions of a Medical Heretic (1979) and by Dr. Szasz in many of his books and essays. They were two of the few honest and intelligent men in their profession.
The arrogance of doctors was plainly evident in the television series “Dr. Kildare,” which I remember watching in 1962 and which reflected the conceit that doctors are wise beyond measure and can resolve human conflicts and disagreements as readily as they remove tonsils.
My point is that millions of Americans bought that conceit and continue to buy it. I suggest it is one of the greatest snow jobs in the history of swindling.
For half a century, Thomas Szasz warned Americans about the tyranny they were courting in the form of the prestige of medicine allied with the power of government in as unholy and evil an alliance as any in history. For the most part, they ignored his warning, just as they ignored similar warnings against trusting do-gooders voiced years ago by Karl Kraus, Rose Wilder Lane, C.S. Lewis, Ayn Rand, and Robert Nisbet, among others.
The two fundamental questions are: (1) Does the COVID virus exist?, and (2) Does it justify Lockdowns? I don’t know the answer to (1), but I give the benefit of the doubt to skeptics, who neither have nor desire power over my life — and NOT to “experts,” do-gooder doctors, or “the Government,” all of whom have or want power over my life. I do know the answer to (2): It is NO; absolutely and unqualifiedly NO.
The paragraph you quoted [COVID Shot Updates, Feb. 12] about the death-by-“vaccine” of a 58-year-old woman in Virginia is a good example of pretend-science, witless writing, and torture endured by people who believe the self-serving claims of do-gooders. Whoever wrote it proves in the first sentence that he cannot write. The passive voice throughout is that preferred by bureaucrats and apparatchiks — valued employees of the Therapeutic State. See Orwell, 1946, regarding the passive voice in political rhetoric, a judgment that applies equally well to the deliberately-opaque but impressive-sounding rhetoric favored by those in the medical and pharmaceutical rackets.
“Unable to transport herself” and “verbal stimuli” are pure racketeer cant. There is nothing that such people hate more than plain English. People who agree to speak and write such absurdities are NOT our allies and do NOT merit our respect or trust.
As to the rest of us: We do not need “31 reasons” not to “take the vaccine.” Indeed, we do not need any reasons not to take it. My choice not to take it is all that I need. Your choice not to take it is all that you need—provided that you have the moral certitude and fortitude to stand by it.
I remember how women in the workplace would ask me, year after year, “Did you get your flu shot yet?” I had to disappoint them because I never did get a flu shot; I never wanted one.
If you are not able to persuade do-gooders or doctors to back off and go away when you say NO to their sales pitch for an alleged “vaccine,” then you can be sure that you are not being “helped” or protected; you are being defrauded and tyrannized.
People who imagine they need reasons not to accept any product, service, or idea being pushed upon them reveal a woefully-primitive understanding of morality and responsibility. All they need is the moral courage to say NO.
“The Government” does NOT own you, your life, or your health.
“The Law” does NOT own those things.
“The State” does NOT own those things.
“Doctors” do NOT own those things.
Do-Gooders and Busybodies do NOT own those things.
You own those things.
I and I alone own those things. What goes into my body or stays out of it is not to be decided by “The Government” or any group of doctors or do-gooders or busybodies. It is my decision and mine alone.
Americans fifty or a hundred years ago would have understood all of this without having to think about it. But Americans today do not have one-tenth the moral fiber, moral capital, or common sense that their ancestors had. They are gullible and stupid beyond what their ancestors could have imagined possible.
Dr. Calvin Linton, professor of English literature, wrote in “What Happened to Common Sense?” [The Saturday Evening Post, April 28, 1962, p. 10.]:
We live in the best-educated age in human history. It also may well be the most gullible. ….there is evidence that certain tendencies in modern education are more likely to increase than to decrease human gullibility…..
What easier way to solidify a Communist regime and to claim total power over a population of worker ants than through Americans’ childlike trust in doctors, medicine, pharmacology, and impressive-sounding medical sloganeering? (Admittedly the comparison is unfair. I apologize to the ants.)
For a nation of such people, I should feel sympathy!? Think again.
They welcome the Therapeutic State. Therefore, they deserve it.
Ain’t my people, ain’t my culture, ain’t my country.

I would very much like to know what Alan intends to do when, refusing the vaccine and not holding a Vaccine Passport, he is faced with being denied the necessities of life, when he can’t travel anywhere outside his own residence; can’t go to any store to buy anything; can’t buy gasoline for his car (which he won’t be able to use anyway because he will be forced to stay home); no one will deliver anything to him; he can’t use the banking system, etc. Can’t run into the forest thanks to high tech surveillance. No money, no food – nothing. If he has small children on whose behalf he refuses the vaccine, they will be removed from his home. Or he may be dragged away to a quarantine camp, permanently.
Amerikans, Canadians, Westerners in general have had it so good for so long they can’t conceive of these things happening to THEM. These calamities occur only to folks over there – you know, across the ocean or maybe in South Amerika.
Yes, the government DOES own us. That is reality. This is not some sort of magical, heavenly spirit world. This is the material, fallen world that we are cooped up in, like chickens in a giant barn waiting to be loaded up onto the truck.
When has any slave stopped being controlled by slaveowners because he says, “You don’t own me!”
PS. I haven’t a clue how I am going to handle things when push comes to shove.
