Horror!

This year, the parish of St. John the Baptist (Russian “Orthodox” Church) in D.C. organized a youth ball at the Russian Embassy. It was to be held on St. Tatiana’s day, the patron saint of students, though it was delayed due to the snow storm in late January (St. Tatiana’s day is on January 25). Here is a video of the Dance Polonaise. It is not perfectly executed, but I watched those boys and girls grow up, and it brought a smile to my face.

I thought of you as I watched the video, thinking that you would approve of this intrusion of civilization (into contemporary barbarism). Wouldn’t it be great if every Catholic parish in the country would sponsor similar events to cultivate the souls of their youth?

The event is a tribute to the late princess Selene Obolensky. The parish has another pre-Lenten ball at the Russian Embassy every year for adults (Lent starts next month for us). The proceeds of both events go to charity. Again, I wish that more parishes would sponsor such activities. Churches have largely stopped being the social and cultural centers of their communities. A pity . . .

I wish you well during this season.

Thank you. I wish you well also.

Did you notice the way the girls curtsied to their male partners? Shocking!

I don’t think this is going to catch on anytime soon. But it is refreshing.
