UNDER a new FDA ruling, the abortion-inducing drug known as the morning-after pill will be available on regular pharmacy shelves to girls as young as 15 without a prescription. The federal government once again shows itself to be the committed and unstoppable enemy of women. Feeding toxins to young girls and preventing procreation are government priorities. Liberals show more respect for the physical health of chickens than they do for human beings. In the last three decades, since abortion and oral contraceptives became widely available to teenagers, the incidence of advanced, metastatic breast cancer in young women has increased dramatically and there is good evidence that these are among the causes, which is to say nothing of the far more serious, non-physical effects of pharmaceuticals that enable girls to be promiscuous and callous.

THE RESPONSE of the Republican Party to the “legitimate rape” remarks made by Missouri Congressman Todd Akin show once again how, on cultural issues, the GOP would rather concede than defend its views or attempt to persuade.

When asked to explain his position that abortion should not be allowable in cases of rape, Akin said: “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” There is a reason why Akin felt the need to use a qualifier. TRAVEL THROUGHOUT America, into small towns, or big suburbs or dense cities, and you will find the phenomenon of single motherhood. One of the most obvious developments of recent years is the lower middle-class white girl who comes from an intact or relatively intact family and who ends up as a single mother. She finds herself in this situation because she is anti-abortion and yet not anti-fornication. There is no pressure on her to marry and yet there is the good and healthy moral incentive to refuse abortion.

She may be cheered by friends and religious organizations for her decision to have a child. And, refusing abortion is the right thing to do. However, it is easy to confuse this heroic decision as something that makes single motherhood right and good. Unless both abortion and unwed pregnancy are stigmatized, social conservatism becomes an unwitting promoter of single motherhood.

Abortion rates have fallen in recent years while single motherhood has increased precipitously. Here is a 2008 piece by Selwyn Duke on the relation between anti-abortion sentiment and the growth of single motherhood. The answer is not for anti-abortion efforts to become less zealous.  Both abortion and single motherhood were shameful fifty years ago and the incidence of both was much lower.

Regarding the discussion over abortion and adoption, I just had to offer a few thoughts. I am adopted and I was adopted into a family that has been plagued with some amount of infertility in every generation.  There are at least seven people who are adopted in our extended family.  It is a wonderful thing. My adopted mom said our joy comes at the price of heartbreak for someone else, which is so true and yet we all seem to be well-adjusted and well-loved. I dislike hearing that some people think that all adopted children are emotional wrecks. This gives adoption a bad name. Having met my biological family as an adult, I can say that a few of my own quirks (and we all have them, adopted or not) came directly from my birth family.

Adoption is so much better in a case where a mom is emotionally unable to raise her children. Abortion is never the answer. My cousin just paid thousands of dollars to adopt her daughter and it took years while a million babies were thrown in a garbage can in that same time.I cost my parents the huge sum of $5.00 in 1959 .The Bible is full of stories of adoption. It is not a bad thing.
