{"id":4767,"date":"2009-11-19T16:15:32","date_gmt":"2009-11-19T21:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thinkinghousewife.com\/wp\/?p=4767"},"modified":"2012-04-06T09:06:42","modified_gmt":"2012-04-06T13:06:42","slug":"vanished-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thinkinghousewife.com\/2009\/11\/vanished-children\/","title":{"rendered":"Vanished Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"first\"> <\/p>\n<p><strong>IN<\/strong> a dialogue on international adoption at the website <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whatswrongwiththeworld.net\/\">What’s Wrong with the World<\/a><\/em> this week<em>,<\/em> I argued\u00a0that child adoption should\u00a0occur\u00a0only within\u00a0national borders.\u00a0We cannot control the adoption business in other countries or ever\u00a0be assured that it does not\u00a0become a form of child\u00a0trafficking, especially given the large sums Westerners are willing to pay.<\/p>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/world\/la-fg-china-adopt20-2009sep20,0,491086.story?page=1\">story<\/a> in the <em>Los Angeles Times <\/em>confirms my point. According to Barbara Demick:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Since the early 1990s, more than 80,000 Chinese children have been adopted abroad, the majority to the United States.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The conventional wisdom is that the babies, mostly girls, were abandoned by their parents because of the traditional preference for boys and China’s restrictions on family size. No doubt, that was the case for tens of thousands of the girls.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>But some parents are beginning to come forward to tell harrowing stories of babies who were taken away by coercion, fraud or kidnapping — sometimes by government officials who covered their tracks by pretending that the babies had been abandoned.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Parents who say their children were taken complain that officials were motivated by the $3,000 per child that adoptive parents pay orphanages.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>“Our children were exported abroad like they were factory products,” said Yang Libing, a migrant worker from Hunan province whose daughter was seized in 2005. All those cute little Chinese girls in America are being used to make the West feel more at ease with China and make us foolishly believe they are a lot like us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Of course none of the\u00a0parents who buy these babies consider that these children grow up being called chink, or gook on the play ground, or that they have no natural identity racially or culturally.
