A Poem for Our Times

THE EAGLE TAKES FLIGHT

Harper Eliot,
March 25, 2020
Asheville, NC

The majestic bald eagle has taken flight
Chasing the fading sun
Beyond the bloody battlefields of mortal strife
When day is finally done.

Day is done!
Withdrawn from the beautiful Ridges Blue
Gone the sun!
As love keeps changing hue.

For Lady Liberty is alas dead
As we run for the exits
A nation strangled by creeping dread
Conducting our own Star Spangled brexit.

Our dear land of the free is no more
A Nation in name only
Orphans of ancient parchment paper lore
Home of only the lonely. (more…)

Mortality and the Coronavirus

FROM Is the Coronavirus as Deadly as They Say?” By Eran Bendavid and Jay Bhattacharya , professors of medicine at Stanford University, in The Wall Street Journal, March 24, 2020:

If it’s true that the novel coronavirus would kill millions without shelter-in-place orders and quarantines, then the extraordinary measures being carried out in cities and states around the country are surely justified. But there’s little evidence to confirm that premise—and projections of the death toll could plausibly be orders of magnitude too high.

Fear of Covid-19 is based on its high estimated case fatality rate—2% to 4% of people with confirmed Covid-19 have died, according to the World Health Organization and others. So if 100 million Americans ultimately get the disease, two million to four million could die. We believe that estimate is deeply flawed. The true fatality rate is the portion of those infected who die, not the deaths from identified positive cases.

The latter rate is misleading because of selection bias in testing. The degree of bias is uncertain because available data are limited. But it could make the difference between an epidemic that kills 20,000 and one that kills two million. If the number of actual infections is much larger than the number of cases—orders of magnitude larger—then the true fatality rate is much lower as well. That’s not only plausible but likely based on what we know so far.

Population samples from China, Italy, Iceland and the U.S. provide relevant evidence. (more…)

Quote of the Day

“IN THE beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.” --- Mark Twain

More Numerical Therapy

THE GOVERNMENT, if it were honest and not benefiting from engineered hysteria, would deploy an army of statisticians to go into communities and actually teach people how to interpret the deceptive numbers being thrown at them about coronavirus. That’s not to say there isn’t serious illness out there and we shouldn’t take reasonable sanitary measures, far short of closing everything down. But we don’t need the National Guard, we need mathematicians!

Here is William Briggs, “statistician to the stars,” giving free counseling to those who will listen:

How accurate are the numbers in reflecting Reality? It wouldn’t surprise anybody who has worked with medical data over a long period of time to say “not very”. Take Italian reports of deaths caused by coronavirus. It’s become clear that what they are reporting and the true caused numbers of dead bodies are at variance.

One professor said “The way in which we code deaths in our country is very generous in the sense that all the people who die in hospitals with the coronavirus are deemed to be dying of the coronavirus.” (more…)

Where’s the Panic about Beer?

AN estimated 88,000 people (approximately 62,000 men and 26,000 women) die from alcohol-related causes annually, making alcohol the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States. --- The National Instititute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

U.S. Flu Deaths, 2019-2020: 23,000-59,000

THE coronavirus is not nearly as deadly as the flu. The Centers for Disease Control, the government agency which monitors health events nationwide, estimates that between 23,000 and 59,000 people in the United States died of the flu between October 1, 2019 and March 14, 2020. Most flu deaths, as is the case with the coronavirus, involve people suffering from other serious health conditions or in advanced old age. It's not much of a consolation perhaps to look at this high number of flu deaths, but the flu is just one way that people who are weak die and we have lived with this reality for many years. The population of the United States is 327 million, so these numbers of flu deaths are relatively low. I mean, people do die. Beware of the figures in the media! They are not counting the undiagnosed people with coronavirus when comparing mortality rates of the flu and coronavirus.

“Social Distancing” at the Bank

I DON’T agree with all of the political conclusions of Mike King of The Anti-New York Times. Among other things, he promotes the Q-Anon psy-op and has been ludicrously forecasting Trump’s take-down of the “deep state” for many months, against all evidence. But his observations are often spot-on and hilarious.

Here is a letter he wrote to his local bank yesterday:

To whom it may concern,

On Monday, March 23, after making a deposit at the teller window (timed 12:36 PM) — at the branch located at xxxxxxxxxxxx, NJ, I returned the pen which the rude and overly aggressive pen-policewoman/virus-fighter on the floor had given to me. This woman — an imported crisis manager of some sort and NOT a regular employee at that branch — barked back at me: “take it with you!” — as if the free pens she just handed out were suddenly infected with the Black Death.

As a long-time client and as a gentleman, I did not appreciate her rude and condescending tone; and the demeaning manner in which she loudly directed all customers to comply with the “social distancing” policy amidst this concocted crisis reminded me of one of those TSA beasts at the airport. For that reason, I politely and quietly  told her that she was over-reacting as I left the pen on her platform and calmly walked out. (more…)

Trump to Release Prisoners

DURING THE Communist Coup in Russia in 1917, the Bolsheviks released prisoners to create havoc and instability. Here we go:

President Trump is considering issuing an executive order to release elderly, nonviolent offenders from federal prisons amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The president said he was considering the move on Sunday during a press conference on the fight to contain the coronavirus. The virus has proved to be particularly contagious in prisons and jails where large numbers of inmates live in close proximity to each other. Rikers Island in New York City has reported nearly 40 cases of the COVID-19 virus among guards and prisoners. (more…)

The Big, Bad Bug — and a Few Bucks

FROM Anthony Migchels: Meanwhile, they’re just shutting down the real economy. Just destroying the livelihoods of millions of people all over the West, locking down entire sectors, offering 1000 bucks (1500 Euro’s in Holland) to make ends meet in the months ahead in exchange. Aren’t they great? Is Big Brother not reaching out? Is it any wonder that the multitude are very grateful? Getting saved from The Bug, and next getting a hand out too? Sadly, reality landing won’t take long. A few thousand Fed bucks are not going to replace weeks and months of real production. The US Economy is projected to implode with 14% next quarter. Talk about torching the place. It is not going to seriously console millions of newly unemployed. Bankrupt small business. The main target, as always, is the West. America in particular.

Gubernatorial Overreach

PENNSYLVANIA Governor Tom Wolfe had no authority to shut businesses down. His mandate was a mandate despite his double talk. The same is true of other governors who have taken unlawful and authoritarian measures against the coronavirus. Marc Scaringi at The Western Journal comments.

“Utterly Unreliable” Data

FROM Stanford Professor John Ioannidas, professor of medicine, biomedical data science, statistics, and epidemiology and population health, writing last Tuesday:

If we had not known about a new virus out there, and had not checked individuals with PCR tests, the number of total deaths due to “influenza-like illness” would not seem unusual this year. At most, we might have casually noted that flu this season seems to be a bit worse than average. The media coverage would have been less than for an NBA game between the two most indifferent teams. Pray at Home

IN THIS AGE of Counterfeit Catholicism, praying the ancient and unchangeable liturgy of the Catholic Church at home is what a small but growing number of Catholics do every Sunday. Now that your church is likely closed, consider joining them by praying the true Mass at home. It is not ideal, but Catholics have done it for many centuries when they did not have access to the sacraments. I highly recommend Gerry Matatics's CD lecture, "What Do Recusant Catholics Do on Sunday?;" his other talks are outstanding too. Matatics's personal story is fascinating. He was raised in an atheistic home and became obsessively interested in the Bible as a teenager. He became a full Presbyterian minister but then converted to Catholicism. The Bible, he said, converted him. For Protestant readers, and actually anyone, I highly recommend his great and entertaining lecture, "How the Bible Converted Me to Catholicism: One Protestant Minister's Surprising Journey of Faith." With everything closed by government fiat, this is a good time to learn more. This is a good time, the best of times, to pray. Come to Mass! Come, children, come to Mass, and bring your merry hearts with you. Come, you that are young and happy, and rejoice before the Lord. Come, you that are old and weary, and tell your loneliness to God. Come, you that are sorely tempted, and ask the help of heaven. Come, you that have sinned, and weep between…
