Pope Pius XII on Modern Technology

“THE seemingly limitless panorama that technology unfolds before the eyes of modern man, however vast it may be, is, in fact, nothing more than a partial projection of life onto reality, for it expresses only the relationship of life to matter. This is why it is a panorama that deceives and ultimately imprisons the overly credulous man within the immensity and omnipotence of technology, in a prison that is certainly vast, but circumscribed and, therefore, in the long run, unbearable to his genuine spirit. His gaze, far from extending toward the infinite reality that is not only matter, will feel constrained by the barriers that this reality necessarily presents. From this arises the deep anguish of contemporary man, who has become blind by having voluntarily surrounded himself with darkness.”

— Pope Pius XII, Christmas Radio Message of 1953
