The Brain-Kneading Machine

PRIOR to the Second World War, one could still speak of the more noble word propaganda; before the First World War, it was still possible to speak of public opinion. Today, the manufacturing of opinion is a gigantic industry. This industry revolves around the axiom launched only fifty years ago: “A lie repeated a thousand times ends up being accepted as truth”; and falsehood has become an art of great finesse and flexibility, rid of the gross brutality of the past, embellished by all the seductions of the many modern means of presentation. All the major means of presentation are connected, directly or indirectly, forming a vast network that circles the earth, so that a global campaign to steer minds one way or another is a daily possibility.”
