I’ve been reading the first of the six volume series written by Charlotte Mason; The Original Homeschooling Series. A paragraph stuck out to me while reading, and this article reminds me of why. Here is what she wrote, back in 1886:

“We are waking up to our duties, and in proportion as mothers become more highly educated and efficient, they will doubtless feel the more strongly that the education of their children during the first six years of life is an undertaking hardly to be entrusted to any hands but their own. And they will take it up as their profession- that is, with the diligence, regularity, and punctuality which men bestow on their professional labours.” (p.2)

I wonder if she would be surprised to find out how much selfishness has prevailed over reason among these “highly educated and efficient” Western women. She was speaking of this over a hundred years ago, and here they are patting themselves on the back as if they’re ahead of the game! And these feminist, career-educated women are not even fully on with the truth here, still, in 2013! Modern women still send their children to preschool and think they’re doing what’s best for their child. But if they’re liberal and traditional, that makes them extra special in their minds. Wrong! That makes them confused. They’re walking straight into a trap of their own making. And what’s worse is that a mother teaching liberal “values” is certainly more dangerous than an outsider imposing these God-hating beliefs on children. A mother is most effective.
